The problem arises primarily in the kitchen, where insects easily find food scraps. However, crumbs regularly appear in all the other rooms too, so it is best to eat in only one room and keep all food in tightly closed containers. If you have pets, make sure their bowls are cleaned of food scraps daily, because leftovers become food for cockroaches. In addition, take out the kitchen rubbish every day so the insects cannot eat the remaining food.
High humidity and cracks in the premises favour the survival of insects. Cockroaches can live a long time without food (up to a month), but without water they die within a week. So you need to remove sources of moisture, fix leaking taps and wipe wet washbasins and sinks. Every crack in a wall or floor is a potential gateway for insects, so such spots must be eliminated. A ventilation grille is also a threat, as they readily enter flats through it; it should be secured with a very fine mesh, preferably tights or gauze.

Unfortunately, this method is not available to everyone because it is hard to carry out: the flat must be left for several days at a near-zero temperature, which means opening all the windows in the crackling frost and enduring it for several days. The most effective folk method against insects is boric acid, which people have used for a very long time. Cockroaches have not developed resistance to it. Recipe for a product with boric acid: Mix 1 boiled potato with 1 egg and add 1 teaspoon of boric acid. Make small balls and scatter them around the flat — in corners, behind furniture, under the sink and washbasin, near the bins, especially in places close to water and food scraps. Additionally, sprinkle dry boric acid along the skirting boards throughout the flat. The boric acid sticks to the insects as they run. Boric acid should be applied periodically, several times, until visible results appear and the cockroaches disappear completely. An interesting idea is to try ordinary substances — ammonia, alcohol, turpentine and kerosene. Just wipe a surface with one of these substances and the cockroaches leave the kitchen.
