Bedbugs are potential carriers of the agents of dangerous human diseases (plague, typhus and relapsing fever, tularaemia, Q fever, etc.). Bedbugs are pests extremely resistant to hardship — they proved it by surviving fires, frost and famine in the post-war years. The bedbug has a scientifically proven unique feature: it acquires resistance to biocides, so-called chemoresistance. As a blood-sucking insect, its colour varies from straw to brownish-red depending on how much blood it has consumed. The bedbug has no wings and does not fly. It has three pairs of legs and a characteristic rounded, striped abdomen. A bedbug bites several times during one feeding. It drinks blood in 1-15 minutes (most often 3-5). The bedbug clearly avoids light and, thanks to its flattened body, can hide in hard-to-reach places and cracks. Bedbugs appearing in daytime may indicate a high population.

Where to look for bedbugs?

Bedbugs nest in upholstered furniture, in beds, mattresses, picture frames, skirting boards, door and window frames, plaster gaps, electrical sockets, under wallpaper, around bedside tables, on the seams and zips of mattresses, under beds at the headboard, and so on. They like dark and secluded places.

The vast majority of people are ashamed of the problem they face. They do not admit that they have these parasites at home — not even to family, let alone friends. They believe they will be unfairly called "dirty". This is a common mistake and ignorance that significantly worsens the problem among other people. Bedbugs must be talked about and acted on quickly. The problem will not go away on its own, and the larger the population, the harder it is to eliminate — and the more it costs. Nowadays any of us can fall victim to bedbugs.

Our observations show that the infestation problem is growing. This is linked, among other things, to the development of tourism. Insects increasingly appear where they seemingly should not be. They are common both in public transport (especially trains and planes) and at resorts, nightclubs, guest houses and hotels. The problem also affects very expensive, exclusive resorts. One of the statements we hear most often is that ... "behind the wall lives a family of homeless people and alcoholics who take things out of the bins, and it is from them that these guests come into our flat...". We do not deny this. Of course these are possible situations, as we described earlier — they can migrate through leaks in the central-heating pipes and through ventilation openings — however this is less likely than us unknowingly "dragging" these nasty insects under our roof ourselves. To understand where bedbugs may actually come from in our home, you need to answer the following questions: Have I stayed in a hotel, motel or guest house in the past year? Do I travel, and have I travelled by train or plane? Did I stay with family or friends, or did we stay with someone else? Have I been to the cinema, theatre or a nightclub? Bought or received a used piece of furniture (bed, sofa) Do I buy clothes in second-hand shops? Has our child been to a camp, summer camp or a school trip? Have I ever stayed in a hospital? If any of the answers above is yes — and it probably is — then it is quite likely this was the cause of bedbugs appearing in our environment. At this stage there is no need to wonder where and how they appeared — just take measures to eliminate them as soon as possible. So if something bit you in bed, it is always worth checking whether the bites are linked to these insects. The sooner we identify the problem, the easier it is to get rid of.

    How to recognize bites? Attention

Not all of us are allergic to bedbugs, so not everyone develops an allergic reaction. We often meet clients who, despite a large insect population at home, have no marks left — this does not mean the bugs do not bite them; unfortunately they do, just not everyone shows marks. The bites are quite characteristic — usually in a straight line. They itch 10 times more than mosquito bites! Bites may not itch at all; sometimes large marks remain, sometimes they are very small and disappear quickly, and in some cases they last for weeks and require treatment with desensitizing agents. There are even cases of hospitalization after bedbug bites, especially in people with severe allergies.
